Tensions Escalate: Rajya Sabha Chairman Faces Potential Removal

Relations between Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar and the INDIA bloc have deteriorated, as the opposition mulls a motion to oust him, citing his consistently partisan actions. With 87 members backing the move, the opposition aims to draw attention to Dhankhar's alleged bias in handling parliamentary proceedings.

Relations between Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar and the INDIA bloc worsened on Friday. Sources indicate the opposition is preparing a motion to remove Dhankhar for his allegedly partisan behavior.

Under Article 67(b) of the Constitution, such a resolution requires a majority vote in the Rajya Sabha and agreement by the House of the People. Opposition sources reveal 87 members have signed the proposal. Two days ago, Leader of the House J P Nadda was informed of this potential motion.

Concerns have been raised over interruptions faced by the Leader of Opposition, citing frequent microphone issues and personal remarks. The opposition demands adherence to rules and conventions in the House.

On Friday, the Congress accused Dhankhar of partisanship, leading to a walkout from the Rajya Sabha. Leader Ajay Maken stated during a press conference that the Chairman's approach is biased, a sentiment echoed by other opposition parties.

Congress's deputy leader Pramod Tiwari highlighted instances where Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge was not allowed to speak, with microphones often shut off. The Congress also objected to derogatory remarks made by Ghanshyam Tiwari against Kharge.

Earlier, a heated exchange occurred between Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan and Dhankhar. Post-walkout, Bachchan criticized the Chair's tone and interruptions, demanding respect for parliamentary protocols.
