Putin Appoints Security Veteran to Spearhead Russia's Naval Strategy

President Vladimir Putin has appointed Nikolai Patrushev, a former head of Russia's FSB and long-time associate, to lead a new Maritime Board overseeing naval policy. This move aims to bolster Russia's naval operations, especially in the Arctic, amid recent setbacks in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine. Patrushev will also handle shipbuilding responsibilities.

President Vladimir Putin has named Nikolai Patrushev, a seasoned security veteran, to lead a newly formed body focused on Russia's naval policy.

The Maritime Board, as stipulated in Putin's decree, will have councils tasked with enhancing Russian naval activities, fortifying its military fleet, and safeguarding national interests in the Arctic. Despite possessing a significantly stronger navy than Ukraine, Russia has faced notable maritime setbacks during the ongoing conflict, including the loss of its Black Sea Fleet flagship, the Moskva missile cruiser, in April 2022.

Patrushev, aged 73, previously served as the head of the FSB security service and has been closely linked to Putin since their tenure in the Soviet era KGB in Leningrad. In May, the Kremlin announced that Patrushev would assume new shipbuilding responsibilities following his removal as head of Russia's Security Council during a reshuffle at the onset of Putin's fifth presidential term.
