Sri Lanka's election commission allocated the cooking gas cylinder symbol to President Ranil Wickremesinghe for the upcoming presidential election. The symbol is significant, reflecting his efforts during the 2022 economic crisis caused by foreign exchange depletion, which led to severe shortages of essentials like cooking gas and fuel.

The 75-year-old leader, who served as a stop-gap president after widespread protests ousted his predecessor, implemented hard reforms and secured international aid to address the country's economic woes. Under his leadership, the government secured a $3 billion bailout from the IMF, and two tranches of $330 million each were released in 2023 as part of the recovery efforts.

Wickremesinghe, also serving as the finance minister, aims to continue his economic revival program and seeks public support for his ongoing debt restructuring negotiations, which are hoped to extend until 2042. He handed over his nominations, appealing to the public for backing in the forthcoming election set for September 21.
