Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury welcomed Friday's announcement of upcoming assembly elections in Haryana and the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, expressing confidence that the Congress party will secure victories and form the next government. Speaking to ANI, Chowdhury said, "We welcome this step...INDIA bloc will form the government on October 4...We welcome the Haryana elections also and we will sweep the elections and form the government there also."
The Haryana assembly elections are scheduled for a single phase on October 1, while polling in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir will be conducted in three phases from September 18 to October 1. Vote counting is set for October 4. According to the announcement, voters in Jammu and Kashmir will cast their votes on September 18 and September 25, with the third phase coinciding with Haryana's polling on October 1.
Jammu and Kashmir will be holding elections after a decade, with the last assembly election occurring in 2014. The previous PDP-BJP coalition government collapsed in June 2018 when BJP pulled its support from then-Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti. Haryana's current government term ends on November 3, 2024, with elections occurring in 90 legislative assembly constituencies. Since the 2019 elections, where BJP formed a coalition with the JJP, Haryana's political landscape has changed, making way for a likely four-way contest involving BJP, Congress, JJP, and AAP in 2024.
