Venezuelan Opposition Demands Recognition of Disputed Election Victory
Venezuela's political opposition, led by Maria Corina Machado, is contesting the official results of the recent presidential election, which declared President Nicolas Maduro the winner. The opposition claims their candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez, actually won with 67% of the vote. The dispute has ignited nationwide protests and international concern, while the government continues to enforce crackdowns.
In cities across Venezuela, the opposition and its supporters gathered en masse on Saturday, demanding recognition of what they claim is their candidate's resounding victory in the presidential vote held nearly three weeks ago. The country's electoral authority, viewed by critics as aligned with the ruling party, announced that President Nicolas Maduro secured his third term with just under 52% of the vote.
The opposition, spearheaded by former lawmaker Maria Corina Machado, has published what they assert are 83% of voting machine tallies online, which show their candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez, garnering an impressive 67% support. This electoral dispute has thrown the economically struggling nation into a political crisis, with government crackdowns on protests leading to at least 2,400 arrests and 23 deaths.
The international community has proposed various solutions to resolve the ongoing election crisis, including a new vote, but both the ruling party and the opposition have largely dismissed these suggestions. In Caracas, thousands gathered along the city's main thoroughfare, where Machado called for independent, international verification of the election results and urged her supporters to remain in the streets. Supportive rallies have also been held in cities across the globe, including Mexico City and Bogota.
