DNC Votes on 2024 Platform Amid Harris' Ascension

Delegates at the Democratic National Convention are set to vote Monday night on their 2024 party platform, which still incorrectly names President Joe Biden as the candidate running for reelection. The largely ceremonial vote at Chicago's convention will signal the party coalescing around a singular vision for the next four years.

This vision is somewhat outdated, as Vice President Kamala Harris has recently taken over the Democratic presidential ticket but has outlined only a few specific policy positions. The Democratic National Committee said its platform, a more than 90-page document, highlights the historic work of President Biden and Vice President Harris, offering a progressive agenda for the next four years.

The platform committee voted to approve the document on July 16, prior to Biden’s withdrawal from the race and his endorsement of Harris on July 21. Thus, the platform references Biden's second term and administration accomplishments while only mentioning Harris’ work as vice president. Notably, Harris' detailed policy positions remain sparse, but the platform does endorse key goals like restoring abortion rights, advancing green energy initiatives, and urging a pathway to citizenship for long-term undocumented residents.
