Critical Turning Point: Blinken Pushes for Israel-Hamas Cease-Fire Deal
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced on Monday that Israel accepted a proposal to bridge differences for a cease-fire and hostage release in Gaza. Blinken, who met with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, called on Hamas to agree to the proposal, which diplomats hope will deter regional escalation.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated on Monday that Israel has agreed to a proposal aimed at resolving disputes holding up a cease-fire and hostage release in Gaza. He urged Hamas to accept the proposal as well, without specifying if Hamas' concerns were addressed in the latest draft.
The negotiations have picked up pace recently, with diplomats aiming for an agreement to avert potential retaliation from Iran and Lebanon's Hezbollah after Israel was accused of killing two key militants. The heightened tensions have fueled fears of a broader regional conflict.
Blinken's comments came following a 2 1/2 hour meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, ahead of further talks in Egypt and Qatar. These mediators have been striving to end the conflict in Gaza for months, although discussions have often stalled. Blinken underlined the importance of Hamas' agreement to move forward with clear terms for implementing the cease-fire.
