Biden's Nuclear Strategy Shift: Focusing on China's Arsenal
In March, President Joe Biden approved a classified nuclear strategic plan aimed at curbing China's nuclear expansion. This revised strategy, named 'Nuclear Employment Guidance,' marks a significant reorientation of U.S. deterrence policy. An unclassified update will be sent to Congress before Biden's term ends.
President Joe Biden, in March, approved a highly classified nuclear strategic plan that reorients the U.S. deterrent strategy to address China's growing nuclear arsenal, according to a report by the New York Times on Tuesday.
The White House has not publicly announced Biden's approval of the revised strategy, known as the 'Nuclear Employment Guidance.' An unclassified notification will be sent to Congress before Biden completes his term. The recent speeches by two senior administration officials subtly referenced this strategy shift.
The updated strategy continues the tradition of previous administrations. 'While the specific text of the Guidance is classified, its existence is in no way secret,' noted White House spokesperson Sean Savett. The move is not a reaction to a specific country or threat, he added.
