Senior Haryana BJP leader Anil Vij has made a statement regarding wrestler Vinesh Phogat's decision to join the Congress party, noting that there should be no objections if she wishes to shift her allegiance from 'desh ki beti' (daughter of the nation) to 'Congress ki beti' (Congress's daughter).
Minutes before Phogat and another prominent wrestler Bajrang Punia joined the Congress, Vij stated that the Congress had been attempting to bring these athletes into their fold from the very beginning, stirring the protests in Delhi.
The BJP has downplayed the significance of Phogat and Punia's move to the Congress. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra commented that in a democratic country, individuals have the freedom to join any political party. Phogat and Punia's shift comes amid a backdrop of protests and allegations of sexual harassment against a former BJP MP.
