Italy's foreign minister, Antonio Tajani, on Tuesday expressed staunch support for Western Balkan nations' bids to join the European Union, cautioning that failing to integrate the region could push it towards Russia or China.
During a visit to North Macedonia, Tajani urged the EU to extend a hand to these countries, highlighting the bloc's responsibility to prevent other global powers, such as Russia, China, or Turkey, from filling the void. He was speaking at a joint press conference with North Macedonian counterpart Timcho Mutsunski in Skopje.
Tajani reiterated Italy's commitment to facilitate North Macedonia's EU membership. Despite having been candidates since 2005 and starting membership talks in 2022, North Macedonia and Albania face prolonged negotiations. Disputes, including a longstanding one with Greece and a current conflict with Bulgaria, have complicated North Macedonia's path to accession.
