The Congress party has named Subhankar Sarkar as the new president of its West Bengal unit, succeeding veteran leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.

Sarkar, who previously served as the All India Congress Committee (AICC) Secretary handling Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, and Mizoram, will now lead the party's efforts in West Bengal. He emphasized that the state Congress will function as the party workers and people in Bengal wish.

In making the announcement, the party president, Mallikarjun Kharge, praised the contributions of Chowdhury, who resigned after losing the 2024 Lok Sabha election to TMC candidate Yusuf Pathan from Baharampur.

The Congress leadership considered feedback from state leaders on improving relations with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) at both national and state levels while selecting the new chief. Chowdhury, known for his differing views from the central Congress-TMC coordination, stepped down to facilitate smooth leadership transition.
