A crucial state election in Brandenburg is being held, just weeks after far-right gains in eastern Germany. With 2.1 million voters registered, the race between the Social Democrats and Alternative for Germany will be indicative of the country's political future. The outcome could impact Chancellor Olaf Scholz's coalition government ahead of federal elections.

Brandenburg is poised for a decisive state election this Sunday, arriving just three weeks after significant gains were made by a far-right party in two other eastern German states.
An estimated 2.1 million voters are expected to participate in electing a new state parliament in Brandenburg, which encircles Berlin, Germany's capital. The election is being scrutinized for indications on Germany's overall political direction.
Recent polls suggest the far-right Alternative for Germany is running neck-and-neck with the incumbent Social Democrats. The Social Democrats, led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz's coalition government, have managed Brandenburg since the 1990 reunification. They aim to retain control despite rising support for both right and left extremes.
A defeat for the Social Democrats in Brandenburg, where Scholz himself holds his constituency, would be a considerable setback one year ahead of the federal elections. The far-right Alternative for Germany's recent victories in Saxony and other regions are raising alarm over the growing right-wing influence in the EU’s largest country.
Support for the far-right has surged due to backlash against large-scale immigration and recent extremist attacks. However, even if victorious in Brandenburg, the far-right party's governance remains doubtful as other parties refuse to collaborate with them.
