President Joe Biden will embark on a milestone trip to Africa, including Germany and Angola, next month, the White House revealed Tuesday. His journey fulfills a promise made during a 2022 summit with African leaders in Washington.
Biden's visit is designed to solidify US relations with Africa, partly to balance China's expanding presence on the continent. Previously, several top officials, including Vice President Kamala Harris and First Lady Jill Biden, have visited African countries in 2023.
The president's itinerary includes meetings in Berlin to strengthen alliances and acknowledge Germany's support for Ukraine, ultimately redefining the NATO alliance. In Luanda, Angola, Biden will discuss key issues including economic partnerships and a significant rail project with President Joao Lourenço.
