Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake announced that the inaugural session of the newly elected parliament is scheduled for next week. The session will primarily focus on electing the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and the Deputy Chairman of Committees as per tradition.
A government gazette confirmed that the session will convene at the parliament chamber on November 21, 2024, at 10:00 AM. Following the recent election, the parliament will consist of 225 members, including 196 representatives from 22 districts and 29 selected from a national list based on vote share.
President Dissanayake, who dissolved the previous parliament a year early, is pushing for significant social reforms through the National People's Power coalition. This move aims to redefine Sri Lanka's governance model, departing from the structures in place since independence in 1948.
