Moldova has expressed strong objections to Moscow over supposed interference in its presidential election and a key referendum on European Union membership.

The foreign ministry formally presented a protest note to Russia's ambassador, alleging attempts to undermine the democratic integrity of the electoral process that saw pro-EU President Maia Sandu emerge victorious.

Russia has dismissed these claims, maintaining that the voting was unfairly conducted. In addition to election meddling accusations, tensions were heightened further by alleged violations of Moldovan airspace by Russian drones.
