American schoolteacher Marc Fogel was warmly greeted by U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday, following his release from a Russian prison after three and a half years of detention. The solemn event transpired amidst a snowy backdrop, symbolizing a possible thaw in U.S.-Russia relations.
Fogel, aged 63, wore an American flag over his shoulders and described himself as "the luckiest man on earth." His release arrives as Trump aims to mend diplomatic ties with Moscow, potentially playing a crucial role in efforts to halt the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Following an unpublicized mission to Moscow, Trump's Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, accompanied Fogel on his journey home. During the flight, a jubilant Fogel celebrated with a glass of wine, a cheese plate, and his U.S. passport, marking the end of a challenging chapter with hopes for a peaceful future.
