Several NATO allies emphasized on Thursday the critical importance of including Ukraine and Europe in peace negotiations as U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth denied claims of the United States betraying Ukraine amidst its ongoing conflict.
European officials are concerned after the Trump administration hinted at direct talks with Russia without their involvement, highlighting Kyiv's exclusion from NATO and emphasizing Europe's self-reliance in defense against any Russian aggression.
As NATO ministers convened, leaders like UK Defence Secretary John Healey and German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius insisted on Europe's central role in negotiations, fearing potential concessions to Russia without European input could undermine peace efforts.
