Macron Stresses Zelenskiy as Key Negotiator for Ukraine
French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's role in negotiating peace for Ukraine. Macron cautioned against peace resulting from capitulation. Talks hinge on Russia's willingness for a credible ceasefire. Meanwhile, U.S. President Trump mentioned Ukraine's potential participation, though Kyiv deemed such discussions premature.
French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized that only Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy can negotiate peace on behalf of Ukraine, as he expressed concern over any agreement that might resemble capitulation. Macron's comments were reported by the Financial Times on Thursday.
According to Macron, the primary issue at hand is Russian President Vladimir Putin's willingness to agree to a genuine ceasefire. Once those conditions are established, the responsibility falls to Ukraine to engage in dialogue with Russia, Macron stated in an Elysee Palace interview.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump acknowledged Ukraine's involvement in potential peace talks, although Kyiv described initiating such discussions as premature during a security conference slated for Friday.
