Slovakia's Political Turmoil: Protestors Demand Fico's Resignation Amid Rising Concerns
Mass protests in Slovakia demand Prime Minister Robert Fico’s resignation over foreign policies aligning with Russia. Sparked by a meeting with Putin and marking seven years since journalist Jan Kuciak's murder, protestors voice concerns over public corruption and Fico’s contentious governance approach.
On Friday, thousands gathered in Bratislava and other Slovak cities to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Robert Fico. The ongoing protests, which have been occurring bi-weekly since January, were fueled by Fico's controversial foreign policy that critics claim brings Slovakia closer to Russia.
Chants of "Slovakia is Europe" echoed throughout the capital, with security experts estimating up to 12,000 participants. This number reflects a decrease from the over 40,000 protestors who rallied two weeks prior. Demonstrations took place in more than 40 additional cities across the country.
The protests also marked the anniversary of investigative journalist Jan Kuciak’s assassination, which previously incited mass dissent against Fico's government. Concerns are mounting over Fico's recent criminal code changes and his termination of military aid to Ukraine. Despite the pressure, Fico remains unyielding to the protestors' calls for his resignation.
