Ceasefire Close: Hostage Exchange between Hamas and Israel

In a significant development amid the ongoing conflict, Hamas released the remains of four hostages early Thursday, while Israel responded by liberating hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. This exchange marks the conclusion of the initial ceasefire phase in the Gaza Strip, with further negotiations pending, and the potential for renewed hostilities looming.

This phase saw the liberation of 33 Israelis, including eight who were tragically killed, and five Thai hostages released separately. Hamas militants initially abducted 251 individuals during the brutal October 7, 2023, attack, which resulted in the death of approximately 1,200 people, primarily civilians. The ensuing conflict has claimed the lives of over 48,000 Palestinians, Gaza's Health Ministry reports.

The ceasefire's prisoner swap involved Israel freeing nearly 2,000 Palestinian detainees in exchange for hostages. As of now, 147 hostages have been released, 59 remain in captivity, with Israel declaring 32 of these captives dead. Among the hostages, 13 are soldiers and five are non-Israelis, including citizens from Thailand, Nepal, and Tanzania.
