Britain's Visa Restrictions Impacting Health Sector

Britain experienced a steep decline in the number of work visas issued in 2024, according to official data released on Thursday. The significant drop, especially affecting health and social care workers, followed restrictions imposed by the former Conservative government aimed at reducing immigration.

The Home Office reported that 210,098 work visas were granted in the twelve months leading to December, marking a 37% decrease from the previous year. Visas for health and social care workers plummeted by 81%, perpetuating a downward trend ignited by stricter immigration controls.

With immigration recurrently ranking as a top voter concern, Prime Minister Keir Starmer pledged to lower immigration and reform the points-based system to place responsibility on businesses for training local workers. This move follows net migration figures that surpassed expectations, hitting over 900,000 by mid-2023.
