High-Stakes Diplomacy: Zelenskiy and Trump on Ukraine's Mineral Wealth
Ukrainian President Zelenskiy meets with President Trump to discuss U.S. involvement in Ukraine's mineral sector amid concerns about shifting U.S. support. The talks revolve around potentially vast economic gains, sparking fears of a pro-Russia peace deal that may undermine Ukraine's security interests.
In a critical diplomatic encounter, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is set to engage President Donald Trump on Friday to ratify U.S. participation in Ukraine's mineral industry. This meeting aims to restore U.S. backing in the face of Russia's ongoing invasion, while Trump concurrently pursues better relations with Moscow.
The Biden administration's previous robust support contrasts sharply with Trump's de-escalation strategy, which raises alarm in Europe and Kyiv over a possible peace treaty favoring Russia. Despite a promising economic partnership, the draft agreement has disappointed Kyiv by lacking explicit U.S. security assurances, although Trump suggests U.S. business involvement will suffice.
While the exact economic value is unspecified, Trump forecasts substantial financial returns. Zelenskiy maintains Ukraine's financial stability as condition for agreement, allocating 50% of revenue from state-owned natural resources to a joint U.S.-Ukraine reconstruction fund. Optimistic diplomacy from Kyiv anticipates increased U.S. backing in warfare, nudging potential new aid from Congress.
