The Congress party on Tuesday launched a critique against Prime Minister Narendra Modi's decision to visit Mauritius, suggesting it highlights his neglect of the ongoing situation in Manipur. The Congress claims the tough situation in Manipur warrants the Prime Minister's attention, something that has been overdue for almost two years now.
General Secretary Jairam Ramesh remarked, 'It is frequent flier time for the Prime Minister, yet the citizens of Manipur await his visit.' The Congress argues that Modi's absence in Manipur, even with President's Rule imposed, is a significant oversight attributing to the prolonged ethnic tensions in the state.
While Modi received a ceremonial welcome in Mauritius and is set to attend its national day celebrations as a chief guest, diplomatic discussions will focus on cooperation in trade and combating cross-border financial crimes. Meanwhile, the Congress continues to criticize the central government's inadequate handling of the ethnic strife in Manipur, which has resulted in over 220 deaths and thousands homeless since May 2023.
