Delimitation Debate: Balancing Seats and Population Dynamics

Amid an ongoing debate over the delimitation process, the Congress has raised concerns, arguing that it unfairly penalizes states that have successfully curbed population growth through effective family planning measures.

According to Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh, states such as Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh may lose parliamentary representation, while states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar stand to gain. This disparity has been identified through an analysis by scholars Milan Vaishnav and Jamie Hintson based on previous Census data.

Rejecting the perceived imbalance, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has called for a coalition of affected states via a Joint Action Committee, aiming to contest the delimitation exercise's focus on population as the primary criterion. This has prompted a call to unified action, with a proposed meeting scheduled in Chennai.
