  • India

The Indian government has imposed a five-year ban on the Awami Action Committee (AAC) and Jammu and Kashmir Ittihadul Muslimeen (JKIM), accusing them of anti-national activities. This decision has sparked significant controversy and backlash from various Kashmiri political entities.

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs cited allegations of inciting law and order issues and supporting secessionist activities as reasons behind the ban. However, the AAC, led by prominent cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, condemned the action, arguing that it suppresses peaceful voices and democratic rights.

Leading political figures in Kashmir, including former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti, have criticized the government's decision, describing it as detrimental to the region's social and political fabric. They argue that dialogue and reconciliation, rather than stringent measures, are key to addressing the complex issues in Kashmir.
