Socialist Party Triumphs in Albanian Elections, Eyes EU Membership

Preliminary election results indicate a significant win for Albania's ruling Socialist Party, led by Prime Minister Edi Rama. The party attracted voters who support Albania's aspirations to join the European Union and seek Rama's re-election for a fourth term.

As of now, 96% of the votes have been counted, with the Socialists securing 52.09% of the vote, translating to 82 seats in the 140-seat Parliament. The opposition, led by Sali Berisha's Democratic Party coalition, trails with 34.44% or 52 seats, with three other minor parties taking the remaining seats.

The Central Election Commission will release the official results 48 hours after voting concludes. Rama's party is optimistic about achieving EU membership within five years, while Berisha argues that Albania isn't ready for such a step.
