According to recent reports, Pakistan and China are discussing the formation of a new regional organization that could effectively replace the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). The talks have reached an advanced stage, highlighting both nations' commitment to fostering regional integration and connectivity.
Sources suggest the initiative follows a recent trilateral meeting involving Pakistan, China, and Bangladesh in Kunming, China. However, Bangladesh's interim government has refuted any notion of a new political alliance between Dhaka, Beijing, and Islamabad, emphasizing that the meeting wasn't politically-driven.
The proposed new grouping aims to include countries like India, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and Afghanistan. Its primary goal is to boost regional engagement through enhanced trade and connectivity, potentially paving the way for a more unified South Asia in lieu of the long-suspended SAARC.
