In a prominent critique, Congress MP Sukhdeo Bhagat has voiced strong disapproval towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not addressing the recent 25% tariff imposition by US President Donald Trump. Bhagat raised concerns over whether the ruling BJP government has become susceptible to American influence, particularly when discussing strategic and economic policies.

Highlighting the escalating trade tensions, Bhagat condemned the absence of government statements and responsibility regarding the tariff issue. He stressed that India, given its substantial trade volume of approximately $130 billion with the US, should not be overpowered by America's aggressive trade moves. Bhagat called on PM Modi to publicly clarify India's position concerning these trade impositions, emphasizing that such external interference undermines India's national sovereignty.

Trump's recent declarations further complicated the situation. He suggested that high tariff rates impede US-India business relations, asserting that he is indifferent to India's economic ties with Russia. The US President signed a broad executive order, adjusting tariffs on 70 countries, including a steep 25% on India. The new tariffs, effective from August 7, will place India in a more challenging economic scenario compared to its neighbors.

In response to these developments, India's Commerce and Industry Minister, Piyush Goyal, informed Parliament that the government is evaluating the tariff's potential impact. He assured that consultations with exporters and related stakeholders are ongoing to collectively assess and address the situation. Goyal affirmed that necessary steps will be taken to protect the national interest.
