Momentum Grows for Ceasefire Deal Amid Ongoing Conflict in Gaza
Israel is evaluating Hamas' response to a ceasefire proposal involving hostage release in Gaza. Mediators Egypt and Qatar are pushing for talks. Despite international pressure, Israel demands the release of all hostages for war cessation. Tensions remain high as negotiations continue.
Israel is currently assessing Hamas' reaction to a proposal for a 60-day ceasefire, which includes the release of half the hostages still held in Gaza, according to two Israeli officials. The proposal aims to halt the ongoing conflict, although one source emphasized that all Israeli captives must be released to end the war.
Efforts to reach a ceasefire have intensified after Israel announced plans for a new offensive targeting Gaza City. Mediators from Egypt and Qatar are advocating for renewed indirect talks between the conflicting sides. The proposed U.S.-backed plan also suggests releasing 200 Palestinian prisoners in Israel in exchange for 10 living and 18 deceased hostages from Gaza.
While the Israeli government evaluates these proposals, internal discussions reveal a reluctance to proceed without securing the release of all hostages. There are also significant domestic political pressures, with far-right government partners opposing a truce, advocating for continued military action until Hamas' defeat.
