Japan's new foreign minister, Toshimitsu Motegi, stated on Wednesday that the nation plans to fortify its defenses in response to evolving warfare dynamics and heightened regional tensions. This strategic move comes ahead of US President Donald Trump's upcoming visit to Tokyo.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, Japan's first female leader, is set to meet with Trump as her initial diplomatic engagement. The meeting aims to strengthen the Japan-US alliance and build a personal relationship of trust between the two leaders, according to Motegi.
Motegi emphasized Japan's ongoing efforts to cooperate with South Korea and other regional allies while seeking stability with China. As Japan undertakes a five-year military buildup, Motegi insists on independent decision-making regarding national defense and plans to discuss defense expenditure during discussions with Trump.
