Fanning the Flames: Tensions in Georgian Politics Amid Arson Arrest
  • Country:
  • Georgia

In a dramatic escalation of political tensions in Georgia, Aleksandre Elisashvili, a prominent opposition leader, was arrested on Saturday. Authorities allege he attempted to set fire to the court chancellery building in Tbilisi by smashing a window and pouring gasoline. Elisashvili is also accused of injuring a court bailiff during the incident while carrying a firearm.

The Ministry of Interior shared video evidence capturing a handgun and a shattered window, underlining the seriousness of the charges against Elisashvili, who founded the Citizens party, a staple of the opposition coalition Lelo-Strong Georgia. As political friction mounts, Georgian Dream, the ruling party, is poised to ban these opposition coalitions, seeking to cement its control.

Amid these developments, protests have intensified with critics denouncing Georgia's perceived authoritarian drift since the war in Ukraine. The EU is increasingly wary, flagging concerns about Georgia's democratic trajectory as Tbilisi's goal of EU membership faces setbacks. Elisashvili, previously involved in a parliamentary brawl over controversial legislation, symbolizes the enduring political turmoil and its impact on European ties.
