U.S. Criticizes Rwanda's Role in DRC Instability
Rwanda's involvement in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo is deemed a violation of the Washington Accords, with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio warning potential U.S. actions. Tensions escalate as the Rwanda-backed M23 rebel group advances, complicating American peace efforts in the region.
The United States has raised concerns over Rwanda's actions in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, viewing them as a breach of the Washington Accords signed under the Trump administration.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized on Saturday that the U.S. will respond to ensure that the commitments made in the deal are upheld. His comments came as the U.S. accused Rwanda of exacerbating unrest in the DRC, given the advance of the M23 rebel group, which allegedly has Rwandan backing.
The situation threatens to unravel U.S.-led peace negotiations, as the DRC and Rwanda had previously agreed to a peace deal in Washington, despite ongoing conflicts in the region.
