Youth political organizations in Kerala, notably the BJP's Yuva Morcha and the CPM's Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), surged into action on Tuesday, staging protests in Pathanamthitta. Their demand was clear: prevent the release of expelled Congress MLA Rahul Mamkootathil unless he resigns, as he remains in the custody of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) on charges of rape.
Opposition Leader VD Satheeshan backed the Congress's swift actions, highlighting the party's suspension and subsequent expulsion of Mamkootathil prior to the formal lodging of complaints. He asserted that the party had acted more vigorously than others and that legal processes should proceed unhindered. Satheeshan reaffirmed the party's stance on zero tolerance for crimes against women.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan suggested that more victims might come forward, implying potential new developments. The accusations, including rape and forced abortion, fall under stringent laws and could lead to severe penalties. The Kerala Police Crime Branch continues to investigate, ensuring all allegations are thoroughly examined.
