On Friday, Pakistan appointed veteran Pashtun tribal politician Mehmood Khan Achakzai as the new leader of the opposition in the National Assembly. His appointment fills a vacancy left since August last year following the disqualification of Omar Ayub Khan.

The position became unoccupied when Omar Ayub Khan from the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) was convicted in a vandalism case, leading to his subsequent disqualification.

Achakzai, who heads the opposition alliance Tehreek Tahafuz Ayeen-i-Pakistan (TTAP), was put forward for the role by PTI's jailed founder, Imran Khan.
