The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has clinched a resounding victory in the Maharashtra civic polls, capturing 1,425 out of 2,869 seats. The triumph establishes BJP as the single largest party in a dozen municipal corporations, including the vital regions of Mumbai and Pune, overturning traditional strongholds of the Thackeray and Pawar families.
Among the significant wins, the BJP dominated the 227-member Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) by securing 89 seats, ending the Thackeray dynasty's three-decade rule. Its ally, Shiv Sena, secured 29 seats, while Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) garnered 65. The Congress and its allies, along with other regional parties, saw diminished returns.
In Pune, the BJP clinched a remarkable 119 seats, showing its expansive reach and political maneuvering in urban centers. Nashik, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and Nagpur also witnessed BJP dominance. This electoral sweep signals a shift in the political landscape, further consolidating BJP's influence across Maharashtra.
