Corruption Allegations Ignite Political Firestorm in Karnataka Assembly

In Karnataka, the BJP and its ally JD(S) intensified their confrontation against the ruling party by staging an overnight protest in the Legislative Assembly. They are demanding the resignation of Excise Minister, R B Timmapur, amid serious allegations of corruption in his department.

The uproar stemmed from accusations that Rs 6,000 crore in illicit funds were being used by the Congress to support their election campaigns, following the arrest of Excise Deputy Commissioner Jagadeesh Naik and others for accepting a bribe. Despite the pressure, Minister Timmapur has denied the allegations and refused to step down.

The BJP insists the official in question referred to Timmapur in recording evidence, which he has dismissed as a misuse of his name. He challenged his critics to prove the allegations while defending his efforts in reducing corruption within the department. The assembly session was adjourned amid fervent protests, with BJP leaders declaring an indefinite demonstration within the House.
