Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, on International Women's Day, praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's initiatives for women's empowerment, including the construction of 14 crore toilets and 6 crore houses under the Swachh Bharat Mission and PM Awas Yojana, respectively. Adhikari emphasized the importance of these measures in enhancing women's dignity by keeping asset ownership with the family matriarch.
Criticizing the ruling Trinamool Congress, Adhikari alleged the distribution of adulterated food grains and promised that a BJP government would ensure the delivery of pure food grains if elected. He attacked the TMC for not participating in the Ujjwala III program, which could benefit 15 lakh women in West Bengal, although the central government provided subsidized cooking gas across India.
Addressing security concerns for women, Adhikari pointed to recent incidents of violence and accused the state administration of failing to ensure their safety. He asserted that a BJP-led government would establish stringent measures for women's protection and fair pricing for farmers' produce. He also accused the TMC of corruption in managing the centrally funded Jal Jeevan Mission, renamed as 'Jal Swapno' in the state.
