In a significant electoral victory, Germany's environmental Greens are set to clinch leadership in the southern state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, according to early forecasts released after the polls closed on Sunday.
Initial results from public broadcaster ARD showed the Greens secured 32% of the vote, outperforming Chancellor Friedrich Merz's Christian Democrats (CDU), who garnered 29%.
This victory positions the Greens to sustain their coalition with the conservatives, with the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party trailing behind at 17.5%.
