Denis Sassou Nguesso, the 82-year-old president of the Republic of Congo, is aiming for another five-year term in the upcoming March 15 election. His quest seeks to extend his over four-decade rule in the oil-rich Central African nation. Sassou, a former paratrooper, first seized power in 1979 and has maintained control almost continuously, except for a five-year interval in the 1990s.

Challenging Sassou are six opposition candidates, who face an uphill battle in a contest he is widely expected to win. Despite the presence of formidable opponents, the opposition remains fragmented, with key political parties boycotting the election and several leading potential candidates imprisoned or exiled. Among his challengers are Joseph Kignoumbi Kia Mboungou, a veteran lawmaker advocating for political change, and Uphrem Dave Mafoula, an economist focused on governance reforms.

Other contenders include Melaine Destin Gavet Elengo, the youngest candidate at 35, who envisions a new political era emphasizing transparency and inclusive development. Meanwhile, Mabio Mavoungou Zinga, a retired customs inspector, pledges to tackle corruption and free jailed opposition leaders. Vivien Romain Manangou aims for institutional reforms and national unity, while Anguios Nganguia Engambe seeks to bridge political divisions in his fourth presidential bid.
