The Trinamool Congress (TMC), supported by key opposition parties, is set to file an impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in Parliament on Friday, as confirmed by party sources. This move is backed by 128 opposition MPs from the Lok Sabha and 63 from the Rajya Sabha, calling for Kumar's removal amid allegations of partiality.
According to Article 324(5) of the Indian Constitution, the Chief Election Commissioner can be removed under the same grounds and procedure as a Supreme Court judge, requiring signatures from at least 100 Lok Sabha members or 50 Rajya Sabha members. Trinamool MP Kalyan Banerjee stated that several prominent parties, including Congress, Samajwadi Party, and DMK, have joined the motion initiated by TMC leader Mamata Banerjee.
TMC's move comes amid accusations that Kumar has conducted West Bengal's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) under the BJP's influence. As West Bengal prepares for Legislative Assembly elections, the political landscape is charged. Meanwhile, BJP's Anurag Thakur denounced the impeachment motion, labeling it a diversionary tactic by Congress and its allies, reigniting the debate over constitutional adherence and political accountability.
