In a significant diplomatic breakthrough, Israel and Lebanon have agreed to a 10-day ceasefire, as announced by President Donald Trump on Thursday. This decision follows the first direct diplomatic talks between the countries in decades, held in Washington.
The truce, expected to commence at 5 pm Eastern, comes after over a month of conflict involving the Iran-backed Hezbollah militant group in Lebanon. Lebanon has been staunch in its call for a ceasefire to halt the hostilities before engaging in more dialogue, while also pledging to disarm Hezbollah.
President Trump has extended an invitation to the leaders of both nations to visit the White House for further high-level discussions, marking their first since 1983. Announcing the ceasefire on social media, Trump highlighted his positive conversations with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, tasking Vice President JD Vance and others to pursue a lasting peace.
