Chinese President Xi Jinping has made a compelling call for the Strait of Hormuz to remain open for unhindered navigation, underscoring its designation as an 'international waterway.' This statement was made during his conversation with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, amidst Iran's claims on the strait.
This marks Xi's first official response to Iran's recent closure of the strait and the subsequent US sanctions on Iranian ports. The blockage has caused energy shortages, particularly felt in Asia. China, a major consumer of Iranian oil, is increasingly concerned over the impact of the ongoing US-Israel-Iran conflict.
The Chinese leader urged for an immediate ceasefire and the use of diplomatic channels to resolve differences, a call echoed by the Chinese Foreign Ministry. Tensions have escalated further following the US's interception and seizure of a cargo ship, prompting a sharp response from China and Iran.
