Peru's Electoral Turmoil: Former Chief Investigated Amid Vote Delay Controversy
Former Peruvian electoral chief Piero Corvetto resigned amid vote counting delays and now faces an investigation into alleged election irregularities. His home was raided by police as part of a broader probe. Meanwhile, electoral authorities are reviewing contested ballots, causing further delays in announcing final results.
Piero Corvetto, Peru's former chief electoral official, resigned this week under criticism for delayed vote counting from the April 12 election. Investigators are now probing alleged electoral irregularities, and police have raided Corvetto's home to gather evidence.
The public prosecutor's office confirmed the raid was conducted by an anti-corruption unit, following public allegations of electoral process issues. They seized electronics and documents from Corvetto's residence.
Despite his resignation to restore public trust, Corvetto denies wrongdoing. Meanwhile, contested ballots are under review, delaying results further. Final results are expected by May 15, with a presidential runoff on June 7.
