Counting has commenced in Assam for its 126-member assembly, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) exuding confidence. Bhupen Kumar Borah, the BJP candidate from Bihpuria, conveyed optimism regarding the continuation of development initiatives and anticipated winning over 90 seats due to public support for Himanta Biswa Sarma's leadership.
In the previous 2016 election, the Congress-held power was wrested by the BJP, with Sarma at the helm. The party now seeks to maintain its governance for a third term amid a formidable challenge from a Congress-led six-party coalition. Borah expressed cautious confidence, predicting positive results by the end of the day.
The vote counting operation commenced across 52 centers statewide, with stringent security in place. As votes are tallied, including postal ballots and electronic voting machines, political party representatives have gathered in strong rooms to monitor the process. High voter turnout was noted during the single-phase polling conducted on April 9.
