In a dramatic twist in the West Bengal assembly elections, Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AUJP) founder Humayun Kabir congratulated the state's electorate for turning away from the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Speaking to reporters on Monday, Kabir accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of extensive corruption, stating, 'What has happened is good; this was bound to happen.'
Kabir's celebration comes as his own electoral prospects shine, with him leading in both the Reijinagar and Nowda constituencies. The Election Commission of India reports that in Reijinagar, TMC candidate Ataur Rahaman has fallen to third place, trailing behind BJP's Bapan Ghosh. Meanwhile, Kabir holds the lead in Nowda after seven rounds of counting, expressing confidence in securing both victories by 3 pm.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has meanwhile crossed the majority mark, posing a formidable challenge to the TMC. As of 1:15 pm, BJP leads with 187 seats, whereas the TMC trails with 92. Despite Mamata Banerjee's past success in securing a decisive victory with 213 out of 294 seats in 2021, the TMC now faces an uphill battle. The election noted a historic voter turnout, but BJP supporters were quick to celebrate, chanting 'Jai Shree Ram' outside Banerjee's residence as results rolled in.
