Road to Peace: A New Chapter in Turkey's Kurdish Conflict
Devlet Bahceli, leader of Turkey's nationalist party, proposes giving Abdullah Ocalan, jailed head of the PKK, a formal role to aid a peace process. This follows accusations of governmental sluggishness. The proposal, welcomed by pro-Kurdish lawmakers, could revive the decades-long effort to end the conflict.
In a surprising turn on Tuesday, the leader of Turkey's nationalist party, Devlet Bahceli, suggested assigning a formal role to Abdullah Ocalan, the imprisoned leader of the banned Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), to invigorate the faltering peace process.
This announcement comes amid growing impatience from pro-Kurdish lawmakers over what they perceive as the government's slow progression towards peace. Bahceli proposed the establishment of a 'Peace Process and Politicisation Coordination Office' to streamline efforts towards a terror-free Turkey, a move he deems vital for national stability.
Gulistan Kilic Kocyigit from the pro-Kurdish DEM Party expressed strong support for Bahceli's proposals, emphasizing the importance of legislative advancements in the peace process. While the PKK has ceased attacks, a deadlock persists over disarmament verifications. Ankara demands credible disarmament before proceeding with legal reforms.
