The Election Commission of India's (ECI) IT platform, ECINET, proved essential during the 2026 General Elections, ensuring seamless operation, quick reporting, and improved cybersecurity. According to an ECI official release, ECINET's cybersecurity measures successfully countered over 68 lakh malicious attempts targeting key election platforms, including the results portal, on counting day, originating both within India and internationally.
The platform managed considerable digital traffic throughout the election period, recording over 98.3 crore malicious hits on polling days (April 9, 23, and 29), with a peak traffic inflow of three crore hits per minute on the May 4 counting day. Since its launch in January 2026, the ECINET app experienced a significant increase in usage, surpassing 10 crore downloads. Initially, its beta version was deployed during the Bihar elections in November 2025.
In an advancement for security at Counting Centres, a QR code-based Photo Identity Card system was introduced on counting day across all States and Union Territories using ECINET, as highlighted by the poll body. Emphasizing digital platform security, the ECI reported generating over 3.2 lakh QR codes on counting day to ensure only authorized personnel accessed the venues, thereby restricting unauthorized entries.
ECINET is celebrated as the world's largest electoral service platform, consolidating all electoral services of the world's largest democracy by integrating over 40 apps and portals from the ECI. Assembly elections conducted in Assam, Kerala, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry in April saw impressive voter turnout. Notably, West Bengal achieved a remarkable 92.67 percent turnout over two phases.
Logistical data from the ECI for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Elections revealed an 85.10 percent statewide voter turnout. Assam and Puducherry exceeded their previous highest poll participation, recording 85.38 percent and 89.83 percent voter turnout, respectively, while Kerala reported a 78.03 percent turnout. (ANI)
