Diplomatic Standoff: Former CAR Prime Minister Anicet Georges Dologuele's Passport Seized
Anicet Georges Dologuele, ex-Prime Minister of the Central African Republic and key opposition leader, accused the government of abusing power by confiscating his diplomatic passport, hindering his travel to an African Union meeting. The action follows his political disagreements with the current administration.
Anicet Georges Dologuele, former Prime Minister of the Central African Republic, claimed government misuse of authority after his diplomatic passport was seized on Wednesday. Dologuele, an influential opposition figure, intended to travel to Addis Ababa for an African Union meeting but was stopped at the airport in Bangui.
The former prime minister, who held office from 1999 to 2001, expressed his indignation at being unable to leave the country, stating he was unexpectedly declared stateless. Dologuele has served on the African Union Peace Fund board of directors since 2018.
Dologuele's criticism stems from political tensions with President Faustin-Archange Touadera, especially after last year's controversial elections. Despite relinquishing his French citizenship to contest Touadera, Dologuele was denied a new passport, claiming his diplomatic passport was unjustly confiscated.
