A recent report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) highlights a significant decrease of over 51% in the income of 36 regional political parties in 2024-25 compared to the previous year. Despite this downturn, 21 parties spent beyond their reported earnings, indicating fiscal challenges.

The ADR analysis, drawing data from the Election Commission, shows these parties had a total income of Rs 1,192.94 crore, down from Rs 2,463.17 crore. Expenditure reached Rs 1,433.07 crore, surpassing income by Rs 240.12 crore. Telugu Desam Party had the highest income, while YSR Congress topped spending with Rs 340.20 crore.

The report points out that voluntary contributions remain the primary funding source. ADR urges stricter disclosure regulations and penalties for tardy audit report submissions, amid lingering concerns on financial transparency among regional parties.
