AfD-Moscow Meeting Signals Potential Energy Shift in Germany

A senior member of Germany's AfD met with top Russian officials including Gazprom's CEO, advocating for the reopening of the Nord Stream pipeline and resuming energy ties with Russia. Despite sanctions and Germany's foreign ministry warnings, the AfD pushes for renewed cooperation to tackle Germany's energy crisis.

In a significant political stride, Markus Frohnmaier of Germany's right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has engaged in dialogue with high-ranking Russian officials. Amidst the backdrop of tense international relations, Frohnmaier met with key figures such as Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller during his presence in St Petersburg.

This move comes despite explicit advisories from Germany's foreign ministry urging the AfD members to refrain from such diplomatic overtures. Highlighting the economic strains on Germany partly attributed to the spiralling energy costs, Frohnmaier emphasized the critical need to reconsider reopening the Nord Stream pipeline. He argues that reigniting trade relations with Russia is vital.

While Gazprom confirmed these engagements, Russia continues to face Western sanctions due to its Ukraine campaign. Nevertheless, Dmitriev, Russia's special envoy, expressed optimism about future collaborations. The AfD's stance challenges Chancellor Merz's government, signaling a strategic shift in upcoming state elections.
